MOVING CHECKLIST

 

1-2 Months Before Moving

  • Schedule transfer of records (medical, children in school, etc.)
  • Get copies of any records needed (medical, dental, etc.)
  • Schedule disconnection/ connection of utilities at both homes
    • Phone/ Cable/ Internet
    • Garbage
    • Water
    • Gas/ Electric

3-4 Weeks Before Moving

  • Fill out “Change of Address” at Canada Post office or online
  • Notify your insurance and credit card companies
  • Cancel automated payment plans & local accounts/ memberships
  • Have home insurance policies set up for your new home
  • Provide important contacts with your new address
    • Employers
    • Friends & Family
    • Accountant

1-2 Weeks Before Moving

  • Ensure an appointment has been made with your lawyer/ notary for the closing of your sale
  • Schedule cancellation of services at your old place, if applied
    • Newspapers and Magazines
    • Landscapers

2-4 Days Before Moving

  • Arrange key pick up with Realtor
  • Reconfirm appointment with the movers or contact friends/ family for help
  • If you have children or pets, arrange a sitter
  • Empty, defrost and clean refrigerator

MOVING DAY!

  • Perform an initial inspection “walk-through”; note any damages and take photos if needed
  • Verify utilities and appliances work (run dishwasher, washer/ dryer, turn on the oven and elements, fridge, freezer & etc.)
    • Water
    • Power
    • Heating and cooling
  • CELEBRATE!!!

1-2 Weeks AFTER Moving In

  • Replace locks if necessary and make at least 2 extra copies
  • Confirm that mail is now arriving at your new address
  • Make sure your previous utilities are cancel and paid
